Mmmm….

No mystery here or a grand reveal at the end. My favorite chocolate of all time is Lady Godiva Sea Salt Dark Chocolate (LGSSDC). Each word in this is important. It has to be Lady Godiva, not just any dark. It has to be dark, not just any chocolate. And it absolutely has to be with sea salt.
Now, if you are a friend reading this, or you are overcome by a bout of kindness and are thinking of sending a huge hamper of these exquisite chocolates to me at once, I have only one word for you — DON’T! That’s right! Don’t send me many bars of this chocolate. In fact, at the moment, don’t send me ‘any’ bars of this chocolate. I just finished eating one bar over a 10-day window. I am in mourning.
Let me explain why I don’t want more at the moment and hope that at least some of you will understand.
Falling in love
My first tryst with Lady Godiva Dark with Sea Salt was when someone brought a bar of this fabulous chocolate for me. Unfortunately, I cannot remember who that was. I’d love to smother that person with hugs for introducing such a delectable piece of art into my life.
I made my husband read this piece and he claims he brought me the first bar. He is cooking up stories about how it happened as I type. He doesn’t usually lie, so I am inclined to believe him.
Oh wait — he just proved it to me with some emails from 2012. OK. He wins! My love affair with LGSSDC is a decade old apparently!
Back again after a small break to smother the husband with hugs 🤣
The first bar looked like this.

I roamed all over the duty-free shopping at Qatar airport recently, but I could not find this amazing dark brown bar. I love that packaging. There is something vintage and elegant and mouth-watering about the gold and brown and the stacked pieces of slim chocolate with the lady herself etched on the surface. I miss this packaging. In addition, I absolutely miss the ‘thin’ pieces of chocolate. The sound you hear when you take a bite of this slim piece is almost on the edge of orgasmic. When the chocolate seeps into your tongue and the first salt crystal hits you at an unsuspecting moment, you have to moan.
Disappointment
When I finally bought my mandatory bar of LGSSDC at the airport, I resigned myself to my fate. The bar I found looked like this. I was disappointed. If the packaging was like this, how would the chocolate taste?

To be honest, the chocolate tasted amazing. The 50% cocoa did its part and the sea salt crystals absolutely played their part. I stingily ate only one square a day and made sure not to do so while the hubby was around lest he ask for a bit. To circumvent any sharing issue, I bought him his own exclusive bar of some other chocolate — I forget what it was. Never mind. I was not about to buy TWO bars of LGSSDC! Am I nuts?
But something is missing. The brilliant packaging and the slim, oh so slim, squares. I think they both had a role to play in the overall experience in my head.
I’ll admit though that I enjoyed this bar just as much. But you know how it is with one’s first crush!
Is the brown packaging still in production? Why was it not at the airport? Please tell me there are now variants and the original that I fell in love with still exists! Prove it to me by shipping a single bar of the brown cover ultra-slim version to my home at once! DM me for my address.
Why Only One Bar?
I don’t know if you realized, but I absolutely LOVE this particular brand and flavor of chocolate. My love is so deep that I’d hate for the relationship to get diluted. I want to maintain exclusivity.
If I have access to bars of this beauty more often, I will take it for granted. The romance I have so carefully crafted in my head over time will crumble to dust. I will not care for the bar anymore.
I simply cannot have that. This is a romance that I want to go on forever and ever or at least until I meet another more powerful and scintillating bar of chocolate. I am weak that way.
But for now, LGSSDC is the chocolate bar love of my life. And I want her to remain on her high pedestal. I don’t want her to rub shoulders with all the other assorted chocolates in my fridge and hang around for weeks neglected because someone brought me one too many.
So — friends and well-wishers — don’t gift me this chocolate anytime soon. Maybe one bar in about 3 months from now?
Have you tried this chocolate? Which is your favorite brand and bar of chocolate? Go on, confess!
